In the middle of the Majdan Nezaležnosti – Kiev’s main square, and its most famous – stands the proud Independence Monument, made of huge shaped blocks carved out of American Bethel White granite. At 63 metres, it towers over all the buildings around it. It is the highest monument in Ukraine, and one of the highest in Europe. On top of the column stands the statue of the Slavic goddess Berehynia, six metres high, who rests her feet on a golden globe.
